System Requirements and Installation Instructions

System Requirements

General:

  • 1 GB RAM minimum (actual memory demand depends on size of model)
  • 80 MB
  • 4 GHz processor minimum

Operating System details:

  • Microsoft Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP
  • Mac OS 10 or newer
  • Ubuntu (Linux/Unix)
  • Bayes-Knowledge Prototype Tool comes bundled with Java JRE 1.8
  • 32-bit and 64-bit versions are available

Installation (Windows)

  1. You will need to be logged in as administrator (or alternatively you can right click on the executable file name and select ‘run as administrator’).
  2. Select the installation file (file extension .exe) you downloaded and double click it. Depending on your Windows security setup you may be prompted to confirm you wish to continue. For example, in recent versions of Windows you may get a message saying "Windows protected your PC from installing an unknown application" - in this case you should click the "More information" option and then confirm you wish to install AgenaRisk.
  3. On some systems (e.g. Windows 8.1) the installation will not start unless you right click the installation file, choose ‘Properties’, go to ‘Compatibility’ tab, tick ‘Run this program in compatibility mode’ and set its value to ‘Windows 7’.
  4. The installation wizard will take you through the installation steps.
  5. By default the installer will install the Bayes-Knowledge Prototype Tool to your "Program Files" or "Program Files x86" directory. Example files and the User Manual will be installed in your Home directory (if the administrator user is different from the normal user then please see ‘Administrator Account Note’ below to ensure that the tool can access these files).
  6. Bayes-Knowledge Prototype Tool runs on the AgenaRisk platform, which is installed during this process, and in order to start AgenaRisk, double-click the AgenaRisk icon in the directory where you installed it or, if you created a start-up group during installation, use that.

Note that Windows installs its own Java JRE on your machine as an integral part of AgenaRisk. It does not interfere with any JREs you may have pre-installed.

Uninstalling (Windows)

  1. In Windows you will find a file called "uninstall.exe", in your AgenaRisk installation directory (typically c:\Program Files\AgenaRisk). Simply double-click on this.
  2. The AgenaRisk folder itself will not be deleted and some supplementary files will remain. You should therefore delete the folder manually.
  3. Some other AgenaRisk files are also stored in your user area (typically in your Home directory Users/<name>/AgenaRisk). Delete the AgenaRisk folder there manually.

Administrator Account Note (Windows)

If AgenaRisk is installed properly then when you select the option. ‘File’ and choose ‘Open Example Model’. You will automatically see a file dialog opened in the Examples folder. Similarly, the actual folder where the examples (and also the tutorials) are installed is operating system dependent, but it is normally something like

/users/<your_name>/AgenaRisk

If you installed AgenaRisk on a machine for which you are not the full systems administrator then on certain operating systems (e.g. Windows 7 and 8) the installer will not copy files into your default user folder. Instead it will install them to the user administrator's area. This is true even if you installed as administrator.  So when you try to open an example model you will to be taken to a default file dialog that does not contain the example models. However, there is a one-time manual fix that will work in most situations. Specifically, you should be able to find the necessary files in the system admin user's area. Typically this will be something like

/users/<admin_name>/AgenaRisk

Once you have located this you should see the manual PDF and folders ‘Examples’ and ‘Images’, you should copy the pdf files and the two folders into your own user folder:

/users/<yourname>/AgenaRisk

Installation (Mac)

  1. Ensure you have admin rights on the machine (to find out whether your account has admin rights, click on the Apple menu, select ‘System Preferences’, and then choose ‘Users & Groups’. Check that your account shows in the list as ‘Admin’.)
  2. Select the Bayes-Knowledge Prototype Tool installation file for Macintosh (file extension .dmg) that you downloaded from the website. You may get a message saying that the file cannot be opened because it is from an untrusted source. In that case simply hold down the ctrl key, click on the application icon and select ‘Open’ (you should then see a message asking you to confirm that you are happy to install the ‘unstrusted’ application).
  3. The installation wizard will take you through the installation steps.
  4. By default the installer will install the AgenaRisk platform to your Applications directory and Example files etc will be installed in your Home directory.
  5. In order to start AgenaRisk, select the AgenaRisk icon in Applications.

Note that the Macintosh setup assumes you have an installed Java JRE on your machine (Apple’s own or Oracle JRE 1.8)

Uninstalling (Mac)

  1. Ensure you have admin rights on the machine (to find out whether your account has admin rights, click on the Apple menu, select System Preferences, and then choose Users & Groups. Check that your account shows in the list as ‘Admin’.)
  2. Open your Applications folder. You should see AgenaRisk as an icon there.
  3. Drag the AgenaRisk icon to the Trash Can.
  4. Locate the folder: /Users/<username>/AgenaRisk and then drag it to the Trash Can

Installation (Linux)

  1. Select the installation shell script installer file (file extension .sh) that you downloaded from the website.
  2. Ensure the script file permissions are changed to executable. To make it runnable, you may need to run the command in terminal from the script directory:

sudo chmod a+x "BK_tool.sh"

Replace the quoted script file name above to match the one you downloaded and make sure to type double quotes yourself, as copying them from here may result in invalid command format.

  1. Run the shell script executing the command:

sudo ./"BK_tool.sh"

  1. The installation wizard will take you through the installation steps.
  2. By default the installer will install AgenaRisk to your home directory. Example files and the User Manual will be installed in the same location.
  3. Note that AgenaRisk model files (extension .cmp and .ast) are compressed archives and will show in your desktop as .zip files. These should not be opened nor edited directly.
  4. To run AgenaRisk from GUI find the executable file and double click it.

Note that the Linux setup assumes you have an installed Java JRE on your machine.

Uninstalling (Linux)

  1. Delete the entire directory where AgenaRisk was installed (not just the link to it).
  2. Some other AgenaRisk files are also stored in your user area (typically in your Home directory /home/<name>/AgenaRisk). Delete the AgenaRisk folder there manually.
